This handsome couple is a pair of Pied Kingfishers hanging out over the Shire River in southern Malawi. The male is on the left, and the female on the right (markings on the breast distinguish the genders). They are, of course, not just hanging out; they are looking for fish to eat. These little birds were lots of fun to watch fishing: when they spot potential prey, they fly up and hover, like a helicopter, directly over the water until they have their specific fish in sight; then they dive down, and bring up their catch. From what I saw, they don’t miss often.

Very cool. Love their poses, and the information about them. I also like the focus here, giving a sharp contrast between the birds and the background. Excellent photo!
